Books to Read

Everyone who eats in this country should read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. Pollan reveals much more than you want to know about WHERE our food comes from. Much more than this food industry would want you to know about what they are feeding you. Pollan investigates where conventional meat is grown and how, why meat is considered bad for you, and why grassfed is so much better. He shows how CORN is in everything and why. I want to quote the entire book to you. Just read it. Especially if you want the inspiration and motivation to take a leap to healthier eating, closer to the land. You are truly what you eat, and agribusiness and food corporations don't want you to really know what they are trying to feed you. That's why citric acid and xanthum gum have mysterious names instead of corn corn corn.

Another book I just read and loved is Michael Ableman's latest photo journalistic journey across the country, "Fields of Plenty". Ableman travels the USA, visiting farms and farmers who grow sustainable food. Its wonderful, uplifting, and informative. It touches on many of the important issues, but is primarily all about beautiful people who put their heart into healthful production. Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal Vegetable Miracle, published in May 2007. about her family's local challenge, to focus a year's time eating as much as possible from their local Virginia community.
Barbara Kingsolver's essay called "A Fist in the Eye of God" is the best explanation of what Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), and the global implications. It is printed in her book of essays called Small Wonders, a wonderful and relevant book you should read. I include a link to the essay here. A Fist in the Eye of God.
